Pittsville — The Edgar wrestling team made a statement at the Marawood
Conference tournament last month, securing the team title before
championship matches.

The Wildcats did it again at regionals.

Fueled by seven individual champions, the Wildcats breezed to their third
straight WIAA regional title, scoring 280 points. Auburndale was a distant
second with 157.5 points.

The team win earned the Wildcats (ranked fourth in Division 3) a team
sectional semifinal showdown with No. 1 Coleman at Coleman. The Cougars
crowned 13 individual champions and advanced all 14 wrestlers to the Division 3 sectional at Shawano. Edgar qualified 11 wrestlers to the sectional tournament.

“Our goal was to get 12 to the sectional, but 11 is impressive,” Edgar
co-coach Kevin Koch said. “I’m proud of the kids. Everyone wrestled hard and
helped the team today.”

Edgar’s champions were Anthony Lemanski (112), Jake Frane (119), Paul
Napierala (125), Luke Nowak (140), Doug Wagner (171), Andy Borchardt (189)
and Aaron Karlen (215).

Doug Wagner cruised to a 9-1 major decision over Rosholt’s Tommy Johnson to
win the 171 title and his second straight regional title.

“It feels good to win the regional title, but the sectional is the big
step,” Wagner said. “I’ve qualified for sectionals for my third year but
I’ve never made it out, so I’ve got a lot of motivation with it being my
last year.”

Marathon advanced three wrestlers to the sectional and had one champion:
130-pounder Alex Brickheimer, who beat Edgar’s Matt Nowak 6-2.
“It was a matter of finishing my moves and wrestling a full six minutes,”
said Brickheimer, who also won his second regional title.

With the matched tied 2-2 heading into the third period, Brickheimer picked
up a penalty point when Nowak was called for his third caution. Brickheimer
then earned an escape and a takedown to secure the four-point win.
Luke Fitzsimmons (112) and Jake Fitzsimmons (140) also qualified for the
sectional tournament for Marathon.
