Willis, Kurth Lead All-Area Team

By Joe Shinners

There was not a more riveting story this year than that of Milwaukee Custer senior Davion Willis among area wrestlers.

From his compelling life story, to his improvement in the classroom and his eventual championship run at the individual state wrestling tournament that made him a fan favorite at the Kohl Center, Willis was an easy choice as the area wrestler of the year. Pewaukee’s Ed Kurth is the area coach of the year after becoming the first area coach to lead an area team to a state final since John Mesenbrink led Arrowhead to the D1 final in 2005.

The other wrestlers considered as wrestlers of the year make up the “Big Three” in the area. They are:

Germantown junior Jesse Thielke, 47-0. The three-time state champion remained on pace to become only the second four-time Division 1 state champion in history by winning the 125 title this year. In the final, Thielke, already a fixture on the national scene, defeated Brookfield East senior Justin Wolfenden (43-8) by a 19-4 technical fall in 4 minutes 49 seconds. Thielke

won the 112 title as a freshman and the 125 title as a sophomore.

Port Washington junior Alex Dieringer, 45-1. The two-time state champion and three-time finalist won the 140-pound title by defeating Wisconsin Rapids sophomore Rylan Lubeck (48-4), Dieringer’s teammate on the state national team, by a 5-1 decision in D1. Dieringer won the D1 103 title as a freshman and finished second at 125 in D2 as a sophomore.

Arrowhead junior Jake Sueflohn, 48-1. The three-time state qualifier and two-time finalist won the 135 title – his first – by defeating Stoughton senior Jackson Urso by a 7-2 decision. Sueflohn finished third as a freshman at 119.

Willis, a three-time state qualifier and three-time Milwaukee City Conference champion, won over hearts and minds as he proved he belonged in the grouping of wrestlers that is the best in the state. It helped that Willis won the toughest weight class in the state – 171 pounds in Division 1 – survived a brutal regional and sectional and defeated one of the state’s top wrestlers from the state’s top team.

Willis (54-1) defeated Wisconsin Rapids sophomore Devin Peterson (49-3) by 3-1 when he secured a takedown with 6 seconds to go in overtime to win the D1 171 title in one of two overtime matches at the state meet.

Willis, who placed fourth at 160 a year ago, pulled off a huge upset to everyone but himself.

He believed he could win, and said so. Others doubted him.

Peterson, one of three sophomore stars on the Rapids team, was a three-time national champion over the summer by winning his age-group in freestlye, Greco-Roman and school boy styles. Willis won the state Greco-Roman title last summer and finished second in the state freestyle meet to Kaukauna senior Noah Budi (48-0), another top state wrestler who won the 189 D1 title this year.

Custer coach Cory Husher was one of the people who didn’t doubt Willis and his focus to win a state title this year.

“It’s his fire and his attitude,” said Husher. “Devin Peterson is a great wrestler. (Willis) still ended up victorious. He never let up and that’s a big thing. Honestly, it was all fire and attitude and being in good position. Wrestling is 90 percent mental as we all say and he was a fierce competitor with attitude. (Willis) hasn’t reached his plateau yet. He’s only wrestled for four years.”

As for the future, Husher said Willis is entertaining several college offers from schools such as Central Michigan, Arizona State, Cleveland State and others, according to Husher. Husher is more concerned about finding a proper academic situation for Willis.

“We’re all rooting for him,” said Husher. “I want him to go to a school that is going to match his needs. He’s a good kid. He’s no slouch. He’s a hard worker. He understands that it’s not going to be easy but he thinks he’s ready for the big show.”

During a season where the competition between teams was close all the way, Kurth guided Pewaukee (20-3) to the state D2 final, where the Pirates lost to Oconto Falls, 38-23. Kurth also helped eight individuals reach the state tournament and had four wrestlers place. It was Pewaukee’s third consecutive trip to the state meet.

“It’s a big feather in the cap for the team,” said Kurth. “It’s a big step for the program. Most of these kids have only wrestled for four years, so I’m pretty surprised with how well they did.”

The other coaches to be considered were:

Ted Price, Muskego. Price, the area coach of the year a year ago, led Musekgo (15-4) to a sweep of the Southeast Conference titles and a berth in the state team tournament for the third consecutive year. Muskego, however, couldn’t get past eventual state runner up Milton in the quarterfinals in a hard-fought xx-xx loss. Ranked No. 1 in the area to start the year, Muskego was plagued by injuries throughout and never was at full strength this year. Price also had a pair of finalists in sophomores Justin Scherkenbach (112) and Jordan Gruettner (189). Price coached seven state qualifiers and three-placewinners.

Jason Stromberg, West Allis Central. Central (27-6) was an afterthought when the season began but emerged as one of the top dual meet teams in the area with a solid core of six seniors. Stromberg led Central to a sweep of the Greater Metro Conference titles and to the state team tournament for the first time in 10 years Central won its quarterfinal but was blown out by Milton in the semifinals. Central defeated Arrowhead, 34-27, in the sectional final to advance to the state team tournament for the first time in 10 years. Central defeated Franklin, 42-12,for its first victory at the team tournament.
