Dardanes was ranked No. 7 at the time by The Open Mat. Sueflohn’s victory lifted him to No. 11 in the TOM national rankings. Arrowhead coach John Mesenbrink credited Sueflohn’s improved defense to his increasing success this year. “I think it was a matter of his leg-attack defense that’s been the difference,” Mesenbrink said. “He’s not getting taken down. That’s the biggest difference this year.”

Undefeated Ranks Thinning Out
The list of undefeated wrestlers in the area shrank to three over the weekend when Milwaukee Lutheran senior Taylor Witty suffered his first loss of the year at the Raider Invitational at Sbeboygan North. Witty (25-1) lost to Seymour senior Andy Coenen (17-5) by a 5-4 decision in the semifinals. Witty finished third. Coenen finished second. Burlington Rolls at Homestead
Burlington’s lightweights again carried it to a strong performance over the weekend as the Demons won the Highlander Invitational at Homestead on a rare Friday tournament. Two-time defending D3 state champion Mitch Kiel of Manitowoc Roncalli won the title at 145.

More Team Losses, But Heritage Alive
The Red Knight Invitational at Milwaukee Lutheran brought more news of lost wrestling teams as two teams cut programs, and Milwaukee Heritage Christian remains on the brink closing. Shoreland Lutheran and Manitowoc Lutheran both shut down their programs, leaving the tournament with 18 teams.
Heritage Christian has struggled financially the past year, but coach Paul Havel is hopeful that the team and the school will be around next year. Heritage Christian had won five consecutive Midwest Classic Conference tournaments before Delafield St. John’s Northwestern Military took the dual and tournament titles a year ago. SJNM is favored to win the league titles again this year
“Right now we’re still teaching and coaching,” said Havel, who has coached two D3 state champions. “The kids I have and the families have been really supportive and want to keep going. We’ll know a lot more in February if we will be here in the future.”

Brookfield East wins Raider Invite
Brookfield East didn’t come away with any individual champions, but it did send four wrestlers to the finals and win the Division 1 title at the Raider Invitational at Sheboygan North. In Division II, UW-Parkside is ranked No. 11. Cody Zimmerman is ranked No. 8 at 125 and Craig Becker is ranked No. 2 at 149 for Parkside. Both wrestled at Hartford.

Team of the week

Week 10: Greendale Martin Luther.

The Spartans made two coaches happy when they won the Midwest Classic Conference tournament title last Saturday as one was able to appreciate helping to save the program 10 years ago and 5-year coach Tony Romano was able to celebrate his first conference title. Martin Luther saw only one wrestler win a title at the league meet, but had six wrestlers finish second and 11 of its 14 wrestlers place third or higher at the tournament. Martin Luther’s lone champion was senior Chris Dotson (20-13), who won the 160-pound title. The Spartans totaled 196.5 points, easily ahead of second-place Kenosha St. Joes (168.5) at the seven-team tournament. It was the first time the Spartans won a conference wrestling title since 1997, and the team became the first boys team at the school to win a conference title since 2004. “We have eight seniors, so we expected to do well,” said Romano. “We’re happy. It’s been a long time. Too long, really.” The victory was sweet for former coach Mickey Ripp, who stepped in 10 years ago when the school was thinking of ending the program and he helped keep it alive. “We owe him a big thank you,” said Romano. “He stepped it up back then and saved the program by keeping it going.”Team_of_the_Week.htmlshapeimage_3_link_0
Wrestler of the Week

Bill Mitchell, South Milwaukee.

The senior finally made his return from a broken bone at the base of his thumb two weeks ago and splashed onto the scene in the 285-pound weight class. Mitchell went 4-0 at the Tom Jannsen Classic, won two matches in conference duals and won the 285 title at the Woodland Conference tournament last week to improve his record to 9-0. Mitchell went 42-6 a year ago and finished fourth at the state tournament in D 1. A year ago, he was voted the Southeast Conference outstanding wrestler at the meet before realignment placed South Milwaukee in the Woodland this year. Mitchell, who was in a cast for five months after the injury during the football season, is the highest returning heavyweight in D1. “I’m happy he’s back,” said South Milwaukee coach Joel Schilling. “It was horrible watching him during his senior season on the sidelines.”Wrestler_of_the_Week_2009-1010.htmlshapeimage_4_link_0

Franklin Comeback Stops Tremper

By Joe Shinners

Franklin – Sometimes the buildup doesn’t match the reality when it comes to a highly anticipated dual meet. Normally, it’s a blowout one way or the other.

That was not the case when the Franklin Sabers hosted the Kenosha Tremper Trojans Wednesday night before a packed fieldhouse in a snow-delayed showdown between two of the top teams in Southeast Wisconsin. The dual was delayed by several weeks due to a snow storm, and it was well worth the wait.

Young Warhawks Clip Orioles at Finish

By Joe Shinners
Sussex – Arrowhead Warhawks wrestling coach John Mesenbrink continues to be amazed by the growth of his young team.

The Warhawks, ranked No. 1 in the area by the Journal Sentinel, held off the Hartford Orioles by the narrowest of margins Saturday to win the eight-team Division 1 Sussex Hamilton Regional team title and move one step closer to a berth in the state team tournament.

It was a regional that will be remembered by the performance of Arrowhead senior Brad Fisher, who clinched the Warhawks’ team title in the final wrestleback of the day, the controversy surrounding Hartford junior Casey Kenealy and the first loss of the year for Milwaukee Custer senior Davion Willis.
Fisher came through in the clutch for Arrowhead, which battled No. 6-ranked Hartford all day but could never take the lead. That was until Fisher (13-16) pinned Sussex Hamilton junior Kurt Shernell (20-21) in 1 minute 24 seconds in the fourth-place wrestleback at 285 pounds to lift Arrowhead to the team title with 232 points. Hartford, in its second heartbreaking regional loss in xx years, finished second with 230.5 points. Sussex Hamilton finished third with 185 points.

The top four individuals in each weight class advanced to the Harford Sectional at 10:15 a.m. Saturday.
Hartford, which lead by as many as 14.5 points throughout the tournament, held a 1.5-point lead heading into the Fisher’s match, and his pin gave the Warhawks just enough points to win the team title. Arrowhead will face No. 5-ranked West Allis Central, the winner of the West Allis Hale Regional, in the team sectional final at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Homestead.

By Mark Massoglia

Stevens Point — Paced by two-time conference champion Devin Peterson and seven other champs, the Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln wrestling team captured the Wisconsin Valley Conference tournament at the SPASH Fieldhouse.

Top-ranked Rapids scored 270.5 points and the eight individual champions tied a school record. The team title was the Raiders 34th WVC title and the 15th in the last 16 years. Wausau West finished second with 210.5 points and Marshfield had 182 points.

Peterson won all three of his matches by pin, including a fall in 2 minutes, 22 seconds over Mat Rieckhoff of D.C. Everest in the finals.

“It feels pretty good to win the Valley title because it’s the toughest conference in the state,” Peterson said. “We came here to get as many champions as we could and win the team title.”

Rapids advanced 11 wrestlers to the finals with Keegan Einerson (119), Ben Westover (125), Kasey Einerson (130), Jake Raflik (135), Rylan Lubeck (140), Zak Benitz (145) and Vaughn Grube (215) winning titles.

Edgar Neas Perfection
at Marawood Meet

By Mark Massoglia

Athens — Dominant and nearly perfect.
Those words best sum up the performance of the Edgar wrestling teamduring the Marawood Conference tournament.

The Wildcats had their fifth straight tournament crown wrapped up before the medal round, scoring 241 points to easily outdistance runner-up Stratford, which scored 124.5.
Edgar was perfect in the finals, going 9 for 9, to set a school record for individual champions.

“Everyone came out and wrestled well in the first round and it just snowballed the rest of the day,” Edgar co-coach Kevin Koch said. “We knew we
had to wrestle well today and the kids performed to their ability and had a lot of success today.”

Two of the Wildcats’ champs won their second conference titles -- Brandon
Manecke (24-1) and Paul Napierala (26-8).
Manecke repeated as the 103-pound champion by beating Athens’ Danny Trimner
(31-5) by 6-3 in double overtime.

“It’s the best,” said Manecke of winning his second conference title.

Willis’ Road to Redemption
Began on Mat, Classroom
View Photos of Davion Willis by Patrick Granger

By Joe Shinners

It’s been a long and trying road that Milwaukee Custer senior wrestler Davion Willis has walked.

	At times, he’s stumbled.

But as he enters the stretch run of his final wrestling campaign, Willis can say he has straightened up and regained a steady footing in life over four years of effort. He’s excelled on the mat, in the classroom and in the community thanks to his determination and drive. He can thank wrestling, a saving grace for the young man who once never thought of goals or following a path to success that he is now on.

It wasn’t always rosy for Willis, one of the top 171-pound wrestlers in the state. Life can be and was cruel to him early on. His mother died when he was only 7 years old. His relationship with his father has been distant, to say the least. It was tough sledding when he was growing up in Chicago. Nothing came easy.

When he enrolled at Custer after moving in with his grandmother, Bernice Travice, four years ago things slowly began to change.

Willis was a problem child at the time, prone to fights, suspensions and trouble in the classroom. His 0.7 GPA at the time is testament to the trouble he was in.

“I was just angry at the world,” said Willis during a recent Custer practice. “Wrestling taught me to deal with anger in a different way. I came in with a lot of anger. I see a lot of people wrestle. But I’m different. I do this as a Zen moment to get away from everything. This is my Zen moment when I wrestle.”

Willis’ changes are vivid. He now boasts a 3.3 GPA and is on the Honor Roll at Custer. He was aiming for a 4.0 this year, he said. He is considering three colleges to attend in Northern Illinois, Augsburg (Minn.) and the Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.).
