MATSIDE
Sectional Notes
Every year there is a sectional that is the toughest in the area and this year it is at Wilmot. With Kenosha Tremper, Burlington, Stoughton and Milton, the sectional is a brutal one to say the least. At 125 pounds, there are six wrestlers with 29 or more victories and four with 32 or more victories. At 130, all eight wrestlers have at least 23 victories and five have 30 or more. But 140 and 189 are particularly difficult.

Hartford highlight: The 171 weight class at Hartford will be the highlight of the sectional as three top area wrestlers clash for two spots. Arrowhead junior Shane Hughes (28-11), Milwaukee Custer Davion Willis (47-1) and West Allis Central senior Dan Diebitz (39-1) will battle for the spots. Hughes upset Willis at regionals last week.

Standing alone: Only two area wrestlers who competed all year remain undefeated. Germantown junior Jesse Thielke, the two-time state champion, is 40-0 at 125. West Allis Central senior Joe Immekus is 40-0 at 152. South Milwaukee senior Bill Mitchell is 12-0 at 285 after coming back from injury. There are only 10 undefeated wrestlers in D1.

Dieringer’schallenge: Port Washington junior Alex Dieringer (39-1), a two-time state finalist and D1 state champ two years ago, will be challenged by Oshkosh West sr. Jeremy Schumann (40-1) at 140 the Sheboygan North Sectional.

Heavyweights collide: At Milwaukee Lutheran in D2, all eyes will be on the 285 bracket as three top wrestlers will be highlighted. Lutheran senior Taylor Witty (37-1), Omro junior Peter Seuffer (37-1) and Valders senior Logan Figueroa (37-0) are in the bracket.

Dieringer, Meins Win at Pulaski
Port Washington juniors Alex Dieringer (31-1) and Justin Meins (26-5) won individual titles at the Pulaski Invitational to lead the Pirates as the only area team in the tournament.

Dieringer, a two-time state finalist and one-time state champion, picked up two pins and then defeated Luxemburg-Casco sophomore Mitch Berceau (35-5) by a 10-1 major decision in the final at 140 pounds. Dieringer entered as the No. 1-ranked wrestler at 140 after bumping up class after The Cheesehead. Berceau is ranked No. 2 in D2. Both rankings are from WiWrestling.com.

Meins had a tougher road to the title. Meins defeated Shawano junior Jared Kust (34-2) by a 3-2 decision in the semifinals before stopping Coleman sophomore Mitch Champagne (28-3) by a 9-2 decision in the final at 125 pounds. Meins entered the tournament ranked No. 4 at 125 in D1. Kust is ranked No. 6 in D1. Champagne is ranked No. 2 in D2.

Coleman won the team title with 211 points, followed by Kaukauna (192), Oconto Falls (182.5) and Luxemburg-Casco (171) in the top four at the 14-team tournament. Port Washington finished in seventh place with 110 points.

Random Lake won the team title with 697 points, followed by Tech (689) and Michicot (637) in the top three.

Kiel pinned at Sorenson Classic
In another example of how tight the competition is in the state, Mitch Keil, a junior 140-pound defending Division 3 state champion, dropped from the undefeated ranks when he was pinned in 1:54 by Oshkosh West senior Jeremy Schumann in the 145 final at the Dirk Sorenson Door County Classic, held in Sturgeon Bay.

Keil fell to 27-1. Schumann improved to 33-1.

Union Grove senior Guy Keeku (28-1) defeated Green Bay Preble/East senior Mark VandenAvond (32-6) by a 6-0 decision in the final at 189 pounds.

McFarland Earns Dells Title
Watertown senior Justin McFarland ran his record to 33-2 by defeating Wisconsin Dells junior Skylar Liebzeit (18-8) by a 13-4 major decision to win the 152-pound final at the Wisconsin Dells Invite.

Viroqua finished first at the eight-team tournament with 177.5 points, followed by Wisconsin Dells (166.5), Omro (162) and Watertown (150.5) at the eight-team tournament.

Sueflohn Continues Recent Roll
Arrowhead junior Jake Sueflohn defeated his fifth nationally ranked wrestler of the year over the weekend at the Huskie Invitational held at Oak Park/River Forest (Ill.). In the 135 final, Sueflohn held off OP/RF senior Chris Dardanes by a 7-5 overtime decision. The victory lifted Sueflohn’s record to 33-1 this year. Dardanes was ranked No. 7 at the time by The Open Mat. Sueflohn’s victory lifted him to No. 11 in the TOM national rankings. Arrowhead coach John Mesenbrink credited Sueflohn’s improved defense to his increasing success this year. “I think it was a matter of his leg-attack defense that’s been the difference,” Mesenbrink said. “He’s not getting taken down. That’s the biggest difference this year.”

Undefeated Ranks Thinning Out
The list of undefeated wrestlers in the area shrank to three over the weekend when Milwaukee Lutheran senior Taylor Witty suffered his first loss of the year at the Raider Invitational at Sbeboygan North. Witty (25-1) lost to Seymour senior Andy Coenen (17-5) by a 5-4 decision in the semifinals. Witty finished third. Coenen finished second. Witty’s loss leaves West Allis Central senior Joe Immekus (31-0 at 152), Milwaukee Bay View senior Davion Willis (33-0 at 171) and Germantown junior Jesse Thielke (31-0) as the area’s lone undefeated wrestlers with at least 20 matches.

Burlington Rolls at Homestead
Burlington’s lightweights again carried it to a strong performance over the weekend as the Demons won the Highlander Invitational at Homestead on a rare Friday tournament. Burlington crowned three champions – Matt Ehlen (103), Derek Gill (112) and Nathan Gill (119) – early and added another title from Zak Verbunker (189) to score 271 points and run away with the team title. Milwaukee Bradley Tech finished second with 216 points, followed by Oconomowoc (215) at the 13-team tournament.
New Berlin Eisenhower/West had two champions in Zach Brucker (135) and Nick Binder (171). Oconomowoc had a pair of titlists in Zach Mommaerts (135) and Jake Morrison (140). Greenfield’s lone titlist was Patrick Bruyette (215) and Menomonee Falls’s Tyler Bross was his team’s only champion at 285. Two-time defending D3 state champion Mitch Kiel of Manitowoc Roncalli won the title at 145.

More Team Losses, But Heritage Alive
The Red Knight Invitational at Milwaukee Lutheran brought more news of lost wrestling teams as two teams cut programs, and Milwaukee Heritage Christian remains on the brink closing. Shoreland Lutheran and Manitowoc Lutheran both shut down their programs, leaving the tournament with 18 teams.
Heritage Christian has struggled financially the past year, but coach Paul Havel is hopeful that the team and the school will be around next year. Heritage Christian had won five consecutive Midwest Classic Conference tournaments before Delafield St. John’s Northwestern Military took the dual and tournament titles a year ago. SJNM is favored to win the league titles again this year
“Right now we’re still teaching and coaching,” said Havel, who has coached two D3 state champions. “The kids I have and the families have been really supportive and want to keep going. We’ll know a lot more in February if we will be here in the future.”

Brookfield East wins Raider Invite
Brookfield East didn’t come away with any individual champions, but it did send four wrestlers to the finals and win the Division 1 title at the Raider Invitational at Sheboygan North. East finished with 156 points, followed by Random Lake (146.5), Sheboygan Falls (145) and Oostburg (144) in the overall standings. East won the Division 1 title. Random Lake won the Division 2 title.
Brookfield East saw senior Joey Woppert (145), junior Larry Watson (160), senior Joe Wahhab (189) and junior Tyler Lecher (215) all advance to the finals in their respective weight classes. Of note, Woppert lost to Sheboygan South sophomore Branden Capetillo, 4-3, in the final at 145.

Waukesha West Trio Goes Undefeated
The Wauksha West Wolverines saw three wrestlers go undefeated at the Portage Duals, an eight team tournament last weekend. Senior Tyler Semrad (119), junior Seth Ganz, and senior Beryon Cosey all went 5-0 at the tournament as West finished 1-4 at the tournament, which was won by Wausau West (5-0).

Team of the week

Week 11: West Allis Central.

The Bulldogs, ranked No. 5 in the area, upset No. 1-ranked Arrowhead, 34-27, at the Homestead team sectional to earn their first berth to the state team tournament since 2001, the only time Central has qualified for the team tournament. Central also won the Greater Metro Conference dual and tournament titles, a regional title to go a long with the team sectional title this year.Team_of_the_Week.htmlshapeimage_3_link_0
Wrestler of the Week

Shane Hughes, Arrowhead.

The junior knocked off the top two area wrestlers at 171 pounds in a four-day span to inject himself into the fray in the state’s toughest weight class this year. Hughes defeated Milwaukee Custer senior Davion Willis, 13-12, to win the 171 title at the Sussex Hamilton Regional. It was Willis’ first loss of the year. Hughes wasn’t done, however, for the week. During the Homstead teams sectional final, Hughes defeated West Allis Central senior Dan Diebitz, 6-5. It was Diebitz’ second loss of the year.Wrestler_of_the_Week_2009-1010.htmlshapeimage_4_link_0

Arrowhead Bulldogged by Central

By Joe Shinners

Jason Stromberg hasn’t been to the state team wrestling tournament since it moved from West Allis Central to the Fieldhouse in Madison.

Well, Stromberg and the West Allis Central Bulldogs should get ready to reacquaint themselves with the tournament the school hosted for 11 years before the WIAA moved it to Madison in 2005.

Central, ranked No. 5 in the area, used three key pins and outlasted the No. 1-ranked Arrowhead Warhawks, 34-27, at the Division 1 Homestead Sectional in a dual that began at 160 pounds to secure a berth in the state team tournament for the first time since 2001 and only the second time overall.

“Since we stopped hosting it, I haven’t been back,” said Stromberg with a smile. “I’m going now.”

Stromberg and the Bulldogs can thank their class of seven seniors, who came up with four of Central’s eight victories. The most important of which was a pin by senior Joey Immekus over Arrowhead senior Spencer Thompson in 1 minute in 57 seconds that sealed Central’s victory.

“We’ve been right there the last eight years,” said Stromberg. “But we’ve always been missing one or two kids. This year, we’re not missing that kid. We have seven seniors and they stepped it up absolutely. ”

Rapids Rolls, As Usual

By Mark Massogila

Menasha — On the strength of 10 champions and advancement all 14 wrestlers to
sectionals, the No. 1-ranked Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln Red Raiders won
their 16th straight WIAA Division 1 regional title with 312 points.

The regional title is the first step to a return trip to the team state
tournament as the Raiders will face Green Bay Preble/East in a team
sectional final at Appleton North on Tuesday.

“The regional win gets us in the team tournament and a chance to return to
team state,” Rapids coach Scott Benitz said.

The Raiders champions were Jason Munoz (103), Keegan Einerson (119), Ben Westover (125), Jake Raflik (135), Rylan Lubeck (140), Zak Benitz (145), Ryan Cone (152), Garrett Schilling (160), Devin Peterson (171) and Curt Fuller (285).

The Raiders went 39-3 in 42 matches on the day.

“We won some close matches, but we also lost a couple close ones and this is the time of the season you want to win the close matches,” Benitz said. “We still have some things to work on because we can be better.”

Stevens Point placed fifth in the team standings with 111 points and advanced three wrestlers to Saturday’s sectional in Green Bay.
Lucas Skibba moved on as the 285-pound runner-up, while Joe Mathe finished third at 140 and Josh Laskowski placed fourth at 160.

Edgar Makes Statement at Marawood Conference Tournament

By Mark Massoglia

Pittsville — The Edgar wrestling team made a statement at the Marawood
Conference tournament last month, securing the team title before championship matches.

The Wildcats did it again at regionals.

Fueled by seven individual champions, the Wildcats breezed to their third
straight WIAA regional title, scoring 280 points. Auburndale was a distant
second with 157.5 points.

The team win earned the Wildcats (ranked fourth in Division 3) a team
sectional semifinal showdown with No. 1 Coleman at Coleman. The Cougars
crowned 13 individual champions and advanced all 14 wrestlers to the Division 3 sectional at Shawano. Edgar qualified 11 wrestlers to the sectional tournament.

Unfinished Business Fuels Sueflohn

By Joe Shinners

Talk to Jake Sueflohn about the stellar season he has had this year and one thing becomes immediately clear.

The Arrowhead junior wrestling star has some unfinished business in this state, and he won’t be happy until he’s settled it.

That journey resumes Saturday at 10 a.m., when Arrowhead and Sueflohn, the top-ranked Division 1 135-pounder in the state, head to the Hartford Sectional. The top two finishers in each of the 14 weight classes advance to the individual state tournament. The individual state tournament is scheduled to be held Feb. 25 to 27 at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Sueflohn should easily move on to the state tournament. He has posted a record of 41-1, and barring an upset will attend his third consecutive state tournament. Two years ago, Sueflohn finished the year with a 50-4 record and finished third at 119 pounds. Last year, Sueflohn went 38-5 and finished second at 125. His career record stands at 129-10.
His progression on the mat has helped Sueflohn land in elite company in the state. It includes Port Washington junior Alex Dieringer and Germantown junior Jesse Thielke. The trio is part of a junior class that is among the best the state has produced since 2002, according to many. All three are nationally ranked.

But while Dieringer has won one state title and appeared in two state finals and Thielke has won two state titles, Sueflohn is still waiting to see his name in the tiny listing of state champions in the state tournament program.

Sueflohn, however, has defeated Dieringer and Thielke during the past year, as well as lost to both.

A year ago, Sueflohn became the first wrestler in the state to defeat Thielke during the high school season. Sueflohn’s 7-6 victory over Theilke in the sectional final at Hartford last year grabbed the attention of many. Thielke, however, returned the favor by beating Sueflohn in the D1 125 final at the state meet by an 8-5 decision.

Sueflohn wasn’t as shocked as many by his victory over Thielke.

“It may have been a surprise to them, but it wasn’t a surprise to me,” said Sueflohn, who gave up football and committed himself to wrestling the entire off-season and preseason.
