"All that proves is that I have been around way too long," Quinlan jokingly said of his accomplishment.

Team of the week

Arrowhead

It's a no-brainer. The unranked Arrowhead Warhawks knocked of state No. 2-ranked Muskego, 40-27, in the fifth round of the Cooney Ten-Team Tournament in a stunning upset. Arrowhead won 8 of 14 matches and won the big match of the dual as junior Jake Sueflohn defeated Muskego junior Tyler Quartullo by a 5-0 decision in the 135-pound weight class.

Wrestler of the Week

Derek Olson, Muskego

Olson, the three-time state qualifier and two-time state finalist, wasted no time getting his season off to a strong start as he begins his quest for his elusive first state title. Olson went 5-0 at the Cooney Ten-Team Tournament, including victories over opponents from Wisconsin Rapids and Apple Valley (Minn.), two nationally ranked teams. According to Muskego coach Ted Price, "He's come back with a vengeance. He's trained hard. He's like a monster and it shows. People will be surprised." Olson also had a victory against Franklin in Muskego's 47-25 Souteast Conference opener.

Quote of the Week

"He's a fine human being. There's nothing arrogant about him at all. He's been a friend of mine for a long time. I still think he could finish third at the Olympic Trials today. He's that fit," ~ Joe Kaster, Editor of The Crossface on Wisconsin State Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Lee Kemp, a three-time NCAA Division 1 wrestling champion at the University of Wisconsin. Kaster attended the induction ceremony along with Duane Kleven, Russ Hellickson, Mitch Hull and Andy Rein, among other UW wrestling greats.Quote_of_the_Week.htmlshapeimage_6_link_0

Muskego Falters Early

By Joe Shinners

Oconomowoc - Muskego wrestling coach Ted Price never could have predicted his team would fall so hard to fast early in the year.
But that's what happened at the Cooney 10-Team Tournament to open the year as Muskego lost in convincing fashion to two nationally ranked teams - Wisconsin Rapids and Apple Valley (Minn.) - and was upset by the upstart Arrowhead Warhawks in a key early season area dual meet.

Wrestlers to Watch This Season

By Joe Shinners

Jesse Thielke, jr., Germantown: Two-time state champion won the 125 D1 title a year ago and is among the top lightweights in the nation. Broken jaw -- sustained during a training accident with former Olympian Dennis Hall -- is now fully healed and he is favored to win a third D1 title this year.

Derek Olson, sr., Muskego: Perhaps no wrestler is under more pressure to win a state title this year. Three-time state qualifier has advanced to a state Division 1 final the past two years and seeks first state title this year. Ranked No. 1 in state at 152 pounds to begin the year.

Alex Dieringer, jr., Port Washington: Won the 103 D1 title as a freshman and finished second in D2 last year at 125. Member of the Wisconsin Cadet Greco-Roman team that won a national title this summer in Fargo, N.D. Dieringer won the 130 national title. Ranked No. 1 at 135 in D1, but wrestled as high as 145 last weekend in dual tournament Luxemburg-Casco.
