Week 11
Muskego Sends 7
Out of Waukesha West
In a wild sectional that saw one of the few undefeated wrestlers in the area fail to qualify for state, a state finalist from a year ago lose in the 171 championship and an upset winner at 285, Muskego still found a way to send seven wrestlers to the state individual wrestling tournament in Madison. The top two wrestlers in Division 1 advance to state; the top three wrestlers in Divisions 2 and 3 advance to state
Muskego was led by the surprising performance of junior 285-pounder Kyle Costigan, who a week ago finished fourth at the regional but found a way to win the weight class and advance to state.
In the final, Costigan (35-14) defeated Wauwatosa senior Glen Kendl (37-2) by a 3-2 margin. There was no wrestleback. Costigan defeated Waterford senior Bill Caudle (36-8) by a 5-2 decision in the quarterfinals and Waukesha South senior Brandon Zahn (33-4) by a 10-4 decision in the semifinals.
The biggest surprise, however, came in the highly competitive 112-pound weight class. Waukesha West junior Tyler Semrad (43-2) entered the sectional undefeated at 42-0 but was pinned by Elkhorn freshman Taylor French (34-9) in 3:40 in the semifinals.
French, ironically, didn’t advance either. He lost to Oconomowoc junior Zach Mommaerts (40-1) by a 5-3 decision in the final and to Muskego senior Kyle Scherkenbach (32-15) by a 10-6 decision in the second-place wrestleback.
At 171, Muskego freshman Roland Dunlap (41-1) defeated Elkhorn senior Richard Kessler (36-1) by a 7-5 decision in overtime. Kessler finished second at 160 a year ago in Division 1.
At 152, Muskego junior Derek Olson defeated Watertown junior Justin McFarland (41-6) by a 11-2 major decision. Olson finished second at 130 in Division 1 at the state tournament a year ago.

Pirates Easily Advance in D2

Pewaukee, ranked No. 2 in the area, gave up only 29 points in the two duals and moved on to the state tournament. The Pirates won 12 of 14 matches against Waupun in the semifinals and then won 10 of 14 against Kewaskum in the final.

Kewaskum Kicks
History Aside
Kewaskum has had a wrestling program since 1965 but hadn’t won a conference wrestling tournament in school history. That streak ended at the Eastern Wisconsin Conference tournament, where Kewaskum won the title with 178.5 points. Sheboygan Falls finished second with 172 points. Kewaskum had 11 of its 14 wrestlers finish in the top three and claimed three individual champions. “It was nice,” said Kewaskum coach Dennis Aupperle. “We wrestled well. (The title) was overdue.”

Hartford’s Becker Tops Mommaerts
Hartford freshman Nick Becker (31-4) posted the biggest upset in the area when he defeated Oconomowoc junior Zach Mommaerts (34-1) by a 3-0 decision to win the 112 title at the Wisconsin Little Ten Conference tournament. It was Mommaerts’ first loss of the year in a weight class that is shaping up as one of the toughest in the area.

Several Weights
Stacked In Area
Several weight classes at regionals have emerged as crowded in the area. The big ones appear to be 103, 112, 189 and 285. Expect movement into 119 from 125 with returning sophomore state champions Alex Dieringer of Port Washington and Jesse Thielke of Germantown the favorites to win state titles at 125 in D2 and D1, respectively.

Muskego Tops
List of Reg. Favorites
In D1, Muskego is heavily favored to win the team title at the Wauesha North Regionoal. Mukwonago is favored at Oconomowoc. Hollnagel to Continue to Wrestle This Year
Sussex Hamilton senior wrestler Mike Hollnagel will be allowed to continue wrestling this year despite his conviction of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle in connection with the car-surfing crash in which a 16-year-old schoolmate was killed.
Hollnagel will not be suspended, according to Sussex Hamilton Public Information Coordinator Denise Dorn Lindberg, because the school’s athletic code does not have any reference to felonies or other criminal behaviors that would result in suspension due to an athletic code violation.
After consulting with legal advisors, Lindberg said, the school may revise its athletic code after Hollnagel is sentenced on March 27 or during the school’s annual review of the code.

By Mark Massoglia

Westfield — Ryan Seidler became the second Adams-Friendship wrestler to win four South Central Conference titles on Feb 7.

The senior 140-pounder defeated T.J. Williams of Wisconsin Dells, 10-6, and joins Bruce Enders, who won his titles from 1978-81, as the only other Green Devil to accomplish the feat.

Seidler, along with the efforts of fellow Green Devils’ champions Jacob Volkey (119), Brandon Sleeman (125), Steve Baumel (152) and Dustin Kirsenlohr (171) helped the team win it's third straight conference tournament title with 217.5 points. Mauston was a distant second with 183 points, while Nekoosa/Port Edwards was third with 166.

"It was a good day for us. We showed what we are capable of today," A-F coach Shawn Groshek said. "We got seven in the finals and came away with five champions. I thought we had a great team effort today."

Volkey, Sleeman and Baumel all claimed their second individual SCC titles.
Nekoosa was paced by two-time champion Gair Walta (189), while Larry Masonick (135) and Brandon Burroughs (145) also won their weight brackets.

Edgar Wins Marawood Again
By Mark Massoglia
Stratford — Neither Stratford nor Aubunrdale had the depth to match eventual champion Edgar, as the two schools accounted for seven of the 14 champions during the Marawood Conference tournament two weeks ago.

Edgar won its fourth tournament title in the past five years and had is wrapped up before the final round of wrestling to finish with 195 points. Stratford placed second with 158 points, followed by Phillips (125.5) and Auburndale (112.5).

Three-time conference champion Josh Breuch, who moved up to 112 pounds and avenged a dual meet loss to Edgar's Jacob Frane by pinning the Wildcat wrestler in 5 minutes, 59 seconds, paced Auburndale.

"He beat me in the dual meet by one point so I really wanted to come back and win this one," said Breuch, who will drop back down to 103 pounds for the tournament series. "It's exciting to win three conference titles because this is a tough conference. You work hard to win it just once so to win it three times feels great."

Breuch’s senior teammate CJ Hale won his second conference title by out scrambling Chais Wakefield, 14-10, to claim the 130-pound bracket. Hale's other title came in 2006 at 125-pounds.

Stratford's total of five champions is the most since the Tigers had seven champs in 2004, the last year the Tigers won the tournament title.

Of the five champions this year, sophomore Luke Radke had the most exciting title match. Trailing, 4-3, heading into the third period, the Tigers' 171-pounder gave up a reversal early, but responded by scoring six straight points to lead, 9-6, with 42 seconds left before turning A.J. Martini of Phillips one more time to earn the win by pin in 5:57.

"I've been working on getting in better shape and giving my all to the last second of every match," Radke said. "I've had some close matches that I've won lately because of working hard the whole match and that's what did it today."

Sophomore Mark Marquardt got Stratford's championship string rolling with his win at 140 pounds. Lance Carlson (145), Radke, Jordan Bauman (215) and Indy Spindler (285) followed suit for the Tigers.

"It was a good day for us," Stratford co-coach Joe Schwabe said. "We're a little thin to keep up with Edgar, but having five champs was great."

Phillips' Casey Williams (135) was voted tournament MVP and is undefeated at 34-0.

The tournament was special for the Brickheimer family of Marathon and the Raiders' second-year program.

Junior Alex Brickheimer (119) and senior Adam Brickheimer (160) both won their second Marawood titles, with Adam remaining undefeated at 34-0. Their father, Dan, along with Dan Fitzsimmons, both assistant coaches for the Raiders, received the Jerry Hahn Memorial Award given each year to outstanding supporters of Marawood Conference wrestling.

Week 2

The top teams in the division pushed Port around as Division No. 2-ranked Lodi defeated the Pirates by a 48-27 margin, No. 6 Mosinee beat Port by 41-20, Sheboygan Falls beat Port by 45-30 and No. 3 Luxemburg-Casco handled Port by 49-24. Week 6 (2007-08)
Milton’s reason for no-show: The typing heads went berserk on the
forums over the absence of Milton at the Zelinski Memorial Duals over the weekend. Speculation ranged from a skin disorder to an athletic code violation for a number of the team’s wrestlers. Milton coach Pat Jauch said it was combination of injuries (five) to varstiy wrestlers and the over-scheduling of the junior varisty and varsity reverse teams. “I hope people give us the benefit of the doubt. We’re not trying to hide anything. We don’t have anything against Whitnall or the teams there. We just couldn’t take a chance and send some kids there who might be disqualified from conference later because of scheduling too many tournaments.”

Week 5 (2007-08)
Lemmer, Thielke, Kuester impress: There were three other area wrestlers who had notable performances by remaining undefeated after the holiday tournaments. Bradley Tech senior Jeff Lemmmer (26-0), a two-time state qualifier, won his second title at the Oshkosh on the Water Classic at the Kolf Sports Center by winning the 160-pound title. Lemmer won the 152 title a year ago. Germantown freshman Jesse Thielke (20-0) continued to impress by winning the 112 title at Oshkosh in dominating fashion. Thielke picked up three pins, two technical falls and only surrendered one point in his five victories. And Waukesha North senior Jerek Kuester (13-0) surprised some by claiming the 145 title at the Mid-States. Kuester won his final three matches by a total of seven points.

Week 4 (2007-08)
Pins carry Arrowhead: In a much-anticipated Classic Eight Conference dual, Arrowhead used four pins to squeeze out a 30-28 victory over Mukwonago last week. Mukwonago won eight of the 14 matches, but couldn’t avoid the pin against Arrowhead. Posting pins for Arrowhead included Matt Hoffman (103), Jake Sueflohn (119), Arik Yde (135) and Al Yde (145). “It was the bonus points,” said Mukwonago coach Andy Trudell. “We stressed all week getting off our backs, and we couldn’t do it. It’s a tough pill to swallow.” The loss was Mukwonago’s first in conference play in four years.

Week 3 (2007-08)
O’Neil dies: Long-time area and state coach Larry O’Neil died Dec. 22 at the age of 79.
