Wrestler of the Week 2008-2009 Week 12 Jesse Thielke, so., Germantown. Theilke won the top match-up in Division 1 by defeating Arrowhead sophomore Jake Sueflohn, 8-5, in the 125-pound final at the state individual wrestling tournament. It was Thielke’s second D1 title, and he is the only D1 wrestler to repeat in 2009. Thielke won the 112 D1 state title in 2008 with a record of 46-0 and finished the 2009 season with a record of 43-1, pushing his high school record to 89-1. Sueflohn (38-5) finished third at 119 a year ago. Sueflohn had defeated Thielke, 7-6, in the sectional final. It was Thielke’s first loss as a high school wrestler after beating Suefhlon, 6-4, in the regional final. Week 11 Jake Sueflohn, so., Arrowhead. Sueflohn handed Germantown sophomore Jesse Thielke the first loss of his career in a 7-6 victory in the 125-pound final of the Hartford Sectional last week. Sueflohn, a third-place finisher in Division 1 at 119 pounds a year ago, improved his record to 35-4 this year. Thielke fell to 39-1 a year after winning the Division 1 112 state title with a record of 46-0. Week 10 David Phillips, Pewaukee. Phillips won his fourth conference title at the Woodland Conference tournament last weekend. Phillips defeated New Berlin West’s Nick Binder by a 15-5 major decision to win the 152-pound title. Phillips won the 112 title as a freshman, the 135 title as a sophomore and the 145 title as a junior. Phillips, a two-time state qualifier, now has 160 career victories and is the second Pewaukee wrestler to win four conference titles. “This is a milestone and he was happy, but he’s looking past conference accomplishments. He’s focused on sectionals and state,” said Pewaukee coach Ed Kurth. Week 9 Steve Berg, Mukwonago. The senior 215-pounder had his match of the year when he handed Waukesha South senior Brandon Zahn his first loss of the season last week during Mukwonago’s 51-14 victory in the Classic Eight Conference. Berg entered the match with a record of 14-11 and managed to pull out a 5-1 victory in overtime while dropping Zahn to 28-1 at the time. Week 8 Chris Weber, sr., Waukesha Catholic Memorial. Weber ran his record to 23-0 at the Tom Jannsen Memorial Duals over the weekend and became the top 285-pounder in the area. In his biggest match, Weber handed Wautwatosa senior Glen Kendl his first loss of the season by a 3-1 decision. Kendl fell to 28-1. Weber wrestled a really good match,” said Tosa coach Kent Morin. Chris out-wrestled (Kendl) in my opinion.” Week 7 Tyler Semrad, jr., Waukesha West. Semrad, a state qualifier a year ago, pushed his record this year to 28-0 by pinning his way through the Irish Invitational at Freedom last weekend. Semrad pinned Denmark sophomore Tyler Van Rite (18-9) in 1 minute 6 seconds in the 112-pound final at the 16-team invitiational. Semrad had three pins at the tournament after dropping from 119 to 112 this week. Semrad has 20 pins on the season and 106 career victories. Week 6 Andrew Moyle, fr., West Allis Hale. Moyle pushed his record to 18-0 this year when he pinned Beloit Turner junior Ian Grice in 1 minute 35 seconds to win the 103-pound weight class at the 10-team Viking Invitational at New Berlin West. Moyle was one of three Hale wrestlers to win individual titles to help Hale won the team championship with 187 points. Week 5 Jesse Thielke, Germantown. Thielke, the standout sophomore, rolled through the Oshkosh on the Water Classic to win the 125-pound title, his second at the tournament. Thielke posted three pins, a technical fall and a major decision to push his record to 20-0 this year. Thielke’s undefeated streak in high school now stands at 66 matches. Week 4 Glen Kendl, Wauwatosa East/West. Kendl, a senior, pushed his record to 13-0 this year with a 3-2 double overtime decision over Waterford senior Marshall Rutherford (12-1) in the final of the 285-pound weight class at the Ed Stech Invitational last weekend. Kendl is the top wrestler in the area at 285, and the only wrestler who returned this year after winning a match at the state tournament a year ago at 285. Kendl finished second at the tournament a year ago. Week 3 Jordan Gruettner, Muskego. Gruettner, a freshman, upset Hartford senior Nick Broadway by a 7-6 decision at 189 pounds during the fifth and final round at the Hartford Duals over the weeken. Broadway is considered one of the top wrestlers at 189 in Division 1 this year. Muskego went on to win the dual, 49-19, and improved to 7-0 this year. Hartford suffered its first loss of the year. “What we had there was one wrestler who went out there and wrestled like it was a state final (Gruettner) and another wrestler who didn’t wrestle with that intensity,” said Hartford coach Steve Best. Week 2 Dwayne Hale, senior, Milwaukee Custer. Hale finished third at the Division 1 state tournament a year ago with a record of 34-3 and opened the season with a strong start at the Cougar Invitational at Campbellsport this past weekend. Hale ran his record to 4-0 by pinning all three of his opponents to win the 171 title at Campbellsport. In the final, he pinned Campbellsport senior Jared Lindsley in 5 minutes 3 seconds. 2007-2008 (Wrestler, school, year, record) Week 9 Jeff Lemmer, sr., Milwaukee Bradley Tech. Lemmer, the Milwuakee City Conference’s top wrestler, defeated Milwaukee Custer senior R’Mandel Cameron by an 8-2 decision in the league meet at Custer. Lemmer improved to 42-0 this year by winning the match between two of the top wrestlers in the conference. Cameron fell to 34-4. Both wrestlers were state qualifiers a year ago. Lemmer is scheduled to move to 160 for the state tournament series. Week 8 Glen Kendl, jr.,Wauwatosa. The junior knocked off previously undefeated Whitnall senior David Witkiewicz by a 7-5 decision in Whitnall’s 45-26 victory over Tosa in a Woodland Conference dual at Tosa last week. Kendl improved his overall record to 32-2 and dropped Witkiewicz, a two-time state qualifier who had previously defeated Kendl three times, to 36-1. After an allowed escape, Kendl (32-2) was able to avoid giving up a late takedown in the third period to pull out the victory and hold off overtime. “You have to give (Kendl) credit,” said Whitnall coach John Quinlan. Kendl became the first wrestler this year to score a takedown and nearfall points on Witkiewicz. “(Kendl) earned it,” said Tosa coach Kent Morin. “He’s worked hard this year. They came at each other like two bears.” Week 7 Brad Baus, sr., Mukwonago. Baus, a two-time state qualifier, has turned into the area’s pinning machine the past two years with his latest victim being Ashwaubenon senior Jody VanLaanen (18-1), the defending Division 1 171-pound state champion. Baus, trailing 2-0 at the time, pinned VanLaanen in 1 minute 53 seconds to win the 189 title at the 10-team DeForest Invite last weekend and was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler. It was Baus’ 25th pin of the season and 96th of his career as he improved to 31-0 this year. “It was cool. He just never ceases to amaze me,” said Mukwonago coach Andy Trudell. “Every time I think he’s out of (a match), he comes through.” Baus also used a late five-point move to pull out a 9-7 victory over Wisconsin Rapids senior Justin Fuller (24-2) in a round-robin match. Week 6 Alex Dieringer, freshman, Port Washington and Nick Hucke, senior, Arrowhead. It’s hard to separate the performances of the two at the Cheesehead, one of the top invites in the state after the holiday tourneys, as both remained undefeated this year. Dieringer (23-0) won the 103-pound title by beating Wausau West sophomore Jon Schuster (24-3) by an 11-4 decision in the final to further solidify his No. 1 ranking in Division 1. Hucke, a two-time state champion headed to Missouri next year, won a tough 135-pound bracket in convincing fashion to cement his status as the top recruit in the state this year. Hucke (19-0) beat West junior Steven Monk (25-2) by a 10-5 decision in the final. Week 5 Luke Multhauf, sr., Hartford. Multhauf, a returning state qualifier, posted four pins and picked up a forfeit to improve his season record to 24-2 with 18 pins to lead the Orioles to a 5-0 record at the Emery Howard Classic last weekend at East Troy. Multhauf, a third-place finisher at the Oshkosh on the Water Classic two weeks ago, was one of five Orioles to go undefeated. “He’s been a solid wrestler for us for four years,” said Hartford coach Steve Best. “He’s just really strong and wrestling great right now.” Week 4 John Hrabik, sr., Pewaukee. Hrabik won the 152-pound title at the 40-team Mid-States Classic last week at UW-Whitewater, giving the Pirates their first champion at the tournament. Hrabik, a two-time state qualifier, defeated Muskego senior Jake Schilling (15-2) by a 3-2 decision in the final to boost his record to 15-2 this year. “He just wrestled really well,” said Pewaukee coach Ed Kurth. “He was dominant riding-wise.” Week 3 Billy Schlottke, sr., Mukwonago. Schlottke ran his record to 13-0 at 160 pounds this year by picking up five wins at the Adams-Friendship Dual Tournament last week to help No. 3-ranked Mukwonago to a 4-1 record. Schlottke, a two-time state finalist and the defending 152-pound Division 1 state champion, picked up four pins at the tournament. Week 2 Andy Dieringer, jr., Port Washington. Everyone was talking about the performance of the returning state qualifier after he knocked off two of the state’s top D1 135-pounders to win the individual title at the Marty Loy Classic last weekend in Fond du Lac. Dieringer defeated Muskego sophomore Derek Olson, 8-5, in the semifinals and Wausau West junior Steven Monk, 9-6, in the finals to help Port finish in fourth place overall at the 24-team tournament. Both Olson (11-1) and Monk (10-1) were state place-winners a year ago. “He’s tough,” said Port coach Angelo LaRosa of Dieringer (11-0). “He wrestled all summer. He works his butt off.” Andy’s brother Alex (11-0), a 103-pounder, also won a title and claimed the No. 1 D1 ranking at 103 in the wiwrestling.com rankings. “They had a really good day,” LaRosa said. Port has been slowed by injuries this year with up to five starters out. The Pirates have received little recognition for a team that advanced to the state team semifinals last year. “A lot of our guys feel that they have been overlooked.” Week 1 Jesse Thielke, freshman, Germantown. The most anticipated freshman in the area lived up to the hype by winning the 112-pound title last weekend at the Marlett Scramble at Menomonee Falls. In the final, he pinned Oak Creek sophomore Matt Blower in 34 seconds to win the title. Thielke’s first big challenge this year will be at the Ed Stech Invitational Saturday at West Allis Central.
